Khalifah. Imam. Amir. Sultan. There are four phrases that have routinely been used to describe the position of leadership in Islam. These are Khalifah, Imam, Sultan, and Amir. In English, these four words are often used interchangeably. And that’s because there have been many Muslim leaders of the past who have held more than one title.
