DRYDOCK YULIAN SHIPYARD (first experience as a leader)

                           DRYDOCK YULIAN SHIPYARD,SHENZHEN CHINA,2015
Chance to be a leader for the first time

It was my first experience going for drydock as I was a first ship cadet.I was very excited as i was told by the Capt that the ship is going for a routine maintenance. It is also a requirement that every ship should go to drydock every 2 and a half years.I was due to sign-off but since it is goingto be my first experience i sacrificed going back home to gather valuable experience. As not everyone gets the chance to go for dry-dock,for example my capt who has a sailing experience of 20 years plus, has not been to drydock before.Thefore i grabbed this oppurtunity with open hands

The maintenance and inspection carried out were on the ships hull.
1)sand blasting on ships side
2)apply 1st and 2nd coat primer on ship side                                                                                3)renewal of of hull anode and marking on ships hull

The other maintenance that was carried out was on the lifeboat as it is the most important equipment onboard:we repaired the sanding of the lifeboats body, orange painting on lifeboat body, renew wood plate inside the lifeboats, and the lifeboats were tested with the presence of llyods surveyor

Further more, the mooring winch forward and aft was also repaired. The winch brakes lining for the mooring winch was removed, chipping on windlass brake band, fitting of new brake linings, applying of 1st and 2nd coat to the brake lining covers, and lastly the brake holding capacity test was carried out.

The anchor cables was removed from the anchor windlass and hence it was marked on the anchor chain.

Myself and 20 of us worked very hard to make this maintenance possible. After 14 days of hardwork the vessel looked new as it was painted all over and the rust stains on deck were all removed.Although it was a hectic 14 days of work myself and the crew of MT.Bunga Lucerne were happy with our hard work as it payed off.At the end of the day the capt of the ship spent the whole crew a wonderful dinner as a token of aprreciation due to our hard work as he was also praised by the companies supritendant.

It was a wonderful experince for me and i will cherish this moment for my whole life.

This drydock experience made me to be a leader for the 1st time in life as I was given the task to monitor  and supervise the work of the shore workers. It is all about trust as someone is willing to delegate their task to u as they believe that u have a leadership quality.
